"Catastrophes, Digital Public Spheres and the Future of Democracy"
(Generously funded by The Japan Foundation)
This conference aims to rethink the relation between new and old media and the public sphere
in post-democratic Japan. Specifically, we aim to examine the public sphere since the tragic
events of 3/11 against the background of recent theories on digital media and popular culture
from Japan and elsewhere, which emphasize and reconsider the role and specificity of media in
the formation of public spheres and critical thought. In particular, the following subjects will be
discussed at the conference: social movements, popular media cultures, and algorithmic and
artistic public spheres and media expressions.
